If you have fine hair, you may have a love hate relationships with silk presses. Majority of the time your hair may come out looking thin, especially if you have low density hair as well. I have had these same struggles and I will share what has helped me go from dreading a silk press to loving it in all it’s glory!
Products
The heavier the products the worst off I am lol, seriously. I do not like extremely thick, heavy products. Not for my twist outs and braid outs and certainly not my silk presses! I opt for lighter products, yet moisturizing products when I do my hair because anything heavy will weigh down the hair making it appear thinner than it truly is. I love shampoo bars, the Mizani conditioner, and Kera care leave in conditioner! These are not lower tox products, except my shampoo but I have yet to replace it with a good lower tox product for my silk presses. If I find some, I’ll be sure to let you guys know!
Embrace the Fluff
Most people don’t like a fluffy silk press and I don’t know why! I think they are beautiful and they help the hair looked textured while also making it appear fuller than it is! You can achieve the fluffy look by not straightening your hair at super high heat! And if you use high heat, try to stick to 1-2 passes at the most! The fluffier your hair is, the more volume it has and it can be extremely flattering.
Flexi Rods Are A Must
I no longer wrap my hair at night because even though it makes your hair straighter, it also makes it flatter! Instead I use flexi rods at night and it has been a life saver for styling my hair without needing to use more heat and adding volume!
